Care for working tack
How to Care for a Mohair Cinch
Mohair holds up well because it is made for regular use, but even a durable cinch benefits from a few minutes of care after the ride. A simple routine keeps sweat and grit from building up and gives you a chance to catch worn hardware before it becomes a problem.
Clean it after a sweaty ride
Shake the cinch out and brush it clean after a sweaty ride. Remove the hair, dust, and dried sweat that can collect in the fibers and sit against the horse's barrel the next time you saddle.
- Give the cinch a quick shake before brushing.
- Pay attention to the areas that collect sweat and grit.
- Make cleaning part of putting the tack away, not a job saved for later.
Keep the mohair dry
Let the cinch dry fully and keep it dry between rides. Damp tack put away in a pile does not get the airflow it needs, so hang the cinch where it can air out before storing it with the rest of your gear.
Check the dees and connector hardware
Look over the dees and connector hardware for wear before you ride. Check the places where the hardware meets the cinch and do not wait for a failure in the arena or out on the trail before replacing a part that is worn.
- Inspect the dees for wear or distortion.
- Check connector hardware and the surrounding attachment points.
- If something looks worn, set the cinch aside until it has been addressed.
